Remove location data from photos before selling or posting online

Every photo your phone takes stores where you were standing, down to a few metres, plus the exact time and the device model. Post a photo of a sofa you are selling and you may have posted your home address too.

What is stored in a photo
- GPS latitude and longitude β usually your home or workplace
- Date and time, to the second
- Phone make and model
- Camera settings and the editing app used
Don't platforms strip this for you?
Big platforms β Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, WhatsApp β do remove location data on upload. Craigslist-style boards, personal blogs, forums, company websites and email attachments usually do not. If you are not sure where a photo will end up, clean it first.
Check and strip
Drop photos into Remove photo metadata. Anything found is listed, and GPS is highlighted in red. Click Strip and save, and you get files with the metadata gone. They are re-saved at quality 95, which is indistinguishable from the original.
This tool never uploads your photos. Sending photos to a server to remove location data would defeat the purpose β so it all runs inside your browser.
Stop recording it in the first place
On iPhone: Settings β Privacy β Location Services β Camera β Never. On Android: open the camera app settings and turn off location tags. Location data is handy for organising holiday photos though, so many people prefer to strip only the photos they publish.
