Passport photo size in pixels — 2×2 in (600×600), 35×45 mm and how to resize a phone photo
2026-09-28
A US passport photo is 2×2 inches, which at the required 300 dpi is 600×600 pixels; the online upload tool also accepts anything square between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels under 240 KB. UK, EU and most visa applications use 35×45 mm, which is 413×531 pixels at 300 dpi. Below is the full table and how to get there from a phone picture.
Size table (300 dpi)
- USA passport & visa: 2×2 in → 600×600 px (upload: square, 600–1200 px, JPEG, ≤ 240 KB)
- UK, EU Schengen, Australia, India, most of Asia: 35×45 mm → 413×531 px (7:9 ratio)
- Canada: 50×70 mm → 591×827 px
- China visa: 33×48 mm → 390×567 px
- Japan: 35×45 mm (same as EU); Korea ID: 35×45 mm
From phone photo to spec in 3 steps
- 1) In your phone's Photos app, crop to a square (US) or 7:9 (35×45 mm) with the head centred and eyes about 60% up
- 2) Resize image → set width to 600 px (US) or 413 px (35×45 mm) with 'keep ratio' on
- 3) Compress image at quality ~85% → usually 60–150 KB, well under 240 KB; convert HEIC to JPG if needed
Rules that get photos rejected
- Plain white or off-white background, no shadows, no filters or beauty retouching
- Head height 50–69% of the frame (US) — cropping too tight is the most common rejection
- Taken within the last 6 months, neutral expression, no glasses (US since 2016)
- Don't upscale a small photo: enlarging blurs it; only shrink a larger original
