Resume PDF too large to upload — getting under the job portal limit

2026-10-05

A resume with a photo, a portfolio page or an embedded font can easily exceed the size an application portal allows. Shrinking it is simple, but there are a couple of things worth not breaking in the process.

Keep the text as text

Many employers run resumes through automated screening that reads the text layer. If you export your resume as an image, or compress it so aggressively that letters blur, that screening may read nothing at all.

Use the lighter compression settings on a resume, and confirm afterwards that you can still select and copy your name from the file.

What is usually making it big

  • A high-resolution photo, the single most common cause
  • A portfolio or work sample appended to the same file
  • Fully embedded font families, especially with several weights

Before you send it

Document properties often carry the template author's name or your previous employer's details. Clearing those takes a moment and avoids an awkward question.
