Convert PDF to Word free — 3 ways that keep formatting, and why scans don't work
2026-09-28
The fastest converter is the one you already have: Microsoft Word 2013 and newer opens PDFs directly and rebuilds them as editable documents (File → Open → pick the PDF). No upload, no watermark, and formatting survives better than with most online converters.
Use the tool
Option 1 — open it in Word
- Word → File → Open → select the PDF → click OK on the conversion notice
- Headings, lists, tables and images are reconstructed; multi-column layouts may need tidying
- Save As → Word Document (.docx)
Option 2 — Google Docs (nothing to install)
Upload the PDF to Google Drive, right-click → Open with → Google Docs. Text-heavy documents convert well; download as .docx via File → Download. Complex layouts and forms tend to lose their structure.
Option 3 — LibreOffice (free, offline)
LibreOffice Draw opens PDFs as editable pages and Writer can import them via File → Open. Good when you can't use cloud services for confidentiality reasons.
Why a scanned PDF won't convert
A scan or phone photo saved as PDF contains a picture of text, not text. Word will import it as an image and nothing will be editable. Check first with the PDF-to-text tool: if it returns your text, any of the options above will work; if it returns nothing, the file needs OCR (optical character recognition).
If you only need part of it
- A few paragraphs — extract the text and paste it
- A chart or figure — convert that page to JPG and insert the image
- Both run entirely in your browser, so the document is never uploaded
