Extract text from a PDF before feeding it to an AI assistant

2026-10-05

Uploading a 300-page report to a chat assistant often hits a length limit, or the model reads the wrong section. Converting to plain text first makes the document much easier to work with.

Why text works better

  • You can drop the cover page, table of contents and bibliography before sending
  • You can see roughly how long it is and decide where to split it
  • You find out immediately whether the PDF actually contains text

Take only the pages you need

If your question concerns one chapter, use Extract pages to pull that range into a new PDF, then convert that. The answer stays focused on the part you care about.

When nothing comes out

A scanned PDF looks like text but is really a picture of text, so extraction returns nothing or garbled characters. You can tell in advance: if you cannot select and copy a sentence in your PDF viewer, there is no text layer to extract.

Frequently asked questions

The output is empty or garbled.
The PDF is almost certainly a scan, which is a picture of text rather than text. If you cannot select a sentence in your PDF viewer, there is no text layer to extract.
Tables come out scrambled.
Plain text does not preserve rows and columns. If a table matters, export that page as an image instead and attach it separately.
